Finally, all-out performance distributors to replace the OEM GM LT1 Optisparks--MSD's Pro-Billet LT1 distributors. They feature a precision-machined billet aluminum housing that fits in place of the factory piece, a new pickup assembly, a trick timing adjustment mechanism, and a new MSD distributor cap and rotor. The pickup is an advanced optical encoder that has proven to be very reliable and stable through extreme rpm and conditions. The rotor is bolted to a drive assembly that is indexed to the shaft, and is stabilized through the use of a large ball bearing assembly. The distributors use an adjustment screw to advance or retard the timing by up to 5 degrees.

Two bad ones in a row. Avoid at all costs.

These units have a long history of problems, which I learned too late. I'm writing this to save others from this fate and to those scratching their heads why they're suddenly having weird problems after installing one. Search on "MSD 83811 problem trouble" and you'll see what I mean. Some folks have really suffered and lost money with these units assuming something else was at fault. One guy with a Camaro spent a day's worth of dyno time trying to pin down the problems below before the shop gave up looking for the source back in 2012. Another guy found the screws holding the rotor in place had fallen out at high speed trashing the cap and rotor in 2013. Be sure to LocTite them in any Opti you install. Clearly, quality assurance is not MSD's strong point now or in the past. In my case I knew it was the MSD, because it was the only thing I changed before the trouble started. Also, my experiences below match most of theirs exactly. (My rotor screws were only slightly loose, but didn't fall out.) I put in a reman GM unit and now it runs fine. ...read more
