Not ideal, but the only game in town

Im currently on my 3rd MSD 6010 box in a year. I have a 6.0L LS swapped into my '72 suburban with a 650 Holley Double pumper. The first box worked great for about 1000 miles. Suddenly, in traffic, the motor started running like junk and died. I fired the car back up and limped it home, but something was definitely wrong...it wouldn't idle without a boot load of gas pedal, and it was just sluggish overall. Turns out, the motor was only firing on 4 cylinder as the driver side bank was dead. I got on the phone with MSD and spent an hour under the car with a volt meter reading out wires. Everything in the harness checked good, so they told me to send the box back as they suspected it was bad. Enter box #2. I plugged it in and the truck ran great for another 1500 miles. Again, in traffic, the same symptoms popped up. Again I limped it home and started doing some more research online. Come to find out there are numerous documented cases of the exact same problems. After doing some in depth troubleshooting (and ordering box #3 in the mean time), I found that the problem was the female side of the harness...the MSD side....that connects to the coil harness didn't have very tight tolerances. Over time, the female side of the connector would wallow out and loose contact on one or multiple pins....in my case, the harness ground. I solved the problem by cutting off both sides of the connector and hard wiring the box to the coils. The truck now runs like a scalded dog. In the time that I was troubleshooting all of this, my original box came back from MSD saying that it tested good on their test set.....no kidding. So I now have 3 perfectly good MSD boxes....I plan on returning the 3rd as its still in the unopened package. Buyer be-ware, these boxes do work as advertised...once you work the kinks out. They are very susceptible to inadequate grounds and the cheap connectors in the harness. ...read more

This is not repairable, buyer beware.

Buyer beware, I bought this unit and it's two step function has ceased to operate, making it basically useless to me. Called MSD and they informed me that this unit can be repaired, so if it's out of it's short 1 yr warranty then you're just out the money for a new one. I do not recommend this product due to a severe lack of quality and both people I spoke with at MSD stated that no where do they mention in the product/warranty description that this product is not repairable. If it had, I would have second guessed buying it. Clearly that's why they don't mention it. I got a total of 400 +/- miles of use out of this before it started malfunctioning. ...read more

No Gaskets

If it would've came with the intake gaskets I'd gave it 5 stars.

great buy

Summit RacingSummit Racing Verified Purchase

I bought this to run On my Figure 8 car. I have a stock LQ4 and it plugged right in and the car started right up. my only gripe is that the leads for the 12v power source, tach, and ground wires could have been a little longer as i mounted mine inside the underneath the dash to keep it out of the elements. All in all a great buy much cheaper than the Edlebrock controller and does a lot more. ...read more
